A design system for an open-source product site

UX/UI Design and Content Strategy

Client: Amazon Web Services OpenSearch.org
Project Duration: 8 months

OpenSearch.org Design System

  • Site Map Updates

We expanded the sitemap and reevaluated the menu navigation to allow for scalable growth and page management.

  • Wireframe Templates

Two primary templates were created to use for landing pages and content pages. In special cases like Events, we created custom layouts that aligned with the specifications outlined in the page templates.

  • Iconography

I led a graphic designer through the creation of iconography and hero graphics to visually identify content areas like community events, blog posts, and product solutions.

  • Buttons

A button library was created to use across the site for page content, hero images, and key product-related links.

  • A sample of configurable component cards in the OpenSearch design system

    Card Components

We used a card system to create reusable components across the site.

  • Tabular Content

Table styles were created to accommodate both numerical content and for term definitions.

Strategy

A list of recommendations to improve the site organized by vision, content and information architecture, UI and UX, and governance
  • Keep true to the grassroots nature of OpenSearch while also providing the necessary structures for growth.

  • Support content navigation and discoverability through an updated site map.

Drive engagement and click-through by displaying relevant content and blog posts on child pages.

  • Take inspiration from the limited branding and expand it into a design system that is recognizable and replicable

  • Future-proof the site to ensure scalable growth while keeping the site maintainable by a small team

Impacts

  • Blog traffic from organic search increased to 80%

  • Registration to the 2023 OpenSearchCon doubled within a month of launching supporting event pages

  • 10% increase of page views quarter over quarter post launch
